This is my son. He is sweet, polite, quiet, imaginative and smart. He is the reason and inspiration behind the mini sessions I'm doing. His name is Talyn. He is 7 years old going into the 2nd grade.
Talyn had a rough 1st grade. After many tears, we ended up having to work with the school to put together an IEP. For those of you who are unfamiliar, the definition for an IEP is "a document that isdeveloped for each public school child who is eligible for special education." Talyn was thought to have ADD. The school administration actually had given him that diagnosis in speaking with me without even actually having a professional diagnosis. Talyn, actually, may very well have ADD. I think it is way too early to give that diagnosis. To me, Talyn is a developmentally normal 7 year old boy with a big imagination. I was actually happy to get the IEP approval because I felt like public school standards have gotten so difficult for our children. THIS would be our golden ticket to allow him to breathe.
Then, we as a family came up with a different plan. A plan that doesn't make him "different" than his peers. We enrolled Talyn in a Waldorf School! When we visited the school I knew we were in the right place. When a child was behind the class in a writing assignment, the teacher said it was ok. She didn't make him sit in the hall to finish alone while the other students moved on. It was just simply, not a big deal. And these kids are allowed to explore, use their imagination, and learn in a hands on, creative way! These children, their differences are celebrated! It's what makes them special because children just aren't all the same.
These mini sessions celebrate that. They are meant to bring out the imagination in your child and celebrate that! These were put together to specifically raise the funds to send my son to a school where he is allowed to be himself. He is so excited about his new school! So thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for helping my son Talyn.
